"Traveling to Bali with Trebbe is a great adventure. We saw beautiful mountains with terraced rice fields, snorkeled off lovely beaches, bargained at lively markets, and ate fabulous food. The best part, though, was contact with the Balinese, which could never have happened were we traveling on our own. Dance concerts, temple festivals at the full moon, meetings with traditional musicians, mask makers, puppeteers and batik makers—these were the true highlights of our trip. Trebbe did a masterful job of making it all happen." Qatana Samanen |
Bali, Indonesia
Limited to four participants
Bali has always held a mystique for westerners.
A lush, green, diamond-shaped island in the midst of the necklace that is the Indonesian archipelago, Bali is a compass of the spirit. Geographically, its people orient themselves and their homes to the volcanic mountains that rise up in the north and house the gods. Personally, they make a daily practice of aligning themselves with a way of life that creates harmony between themselves and other humans, the earth, and spirit.
Bali is a rhythm, from the gamelan orchestras heard daily in the villages, to the silken slash of the scythe cutting emerald stalks of rice, to the swaying steps of the women as they walk to the temple in their colorful sarongs, balancing on their heads towering offerings of fruit and flowers. And Bali is a culture continually in search of balance. Having maintained its religious, artistic, and linguistic independence for hundreds of years, the island thrives as a place where efforts to solve contemporary problems like global climate change and sustainable agriculture are interwoven with joyful and conscientious attention to ancient traditions.
During this, our sixth annual, journey you'll attend a temple ceremony in Ubud, the cultural hub of the island, and receive a blessing ceremony at the sacred spring, Tirta Empul. In the secluded mountain village of Munduk in the north, guided walks will take you off the beaten path to stand before a huge waterfall, walk through rice paddies that have been maintained through community tradition for hundreds of years, and slip among the labyrinthine branches of a gigantic and sacred banyan tree that once hid a band of Balinese patriots from the Dutch soldiers who pursued them.
Members of our small group will have a private discussion with a village priest, a renowned maker of sacred masks, and a renowned gamelan musician. You'll hike through lush forests and learn about the communal systems of irrigation and planting that distinguish Balinese agriculture. And of course you’ll have ample time to visit galleries in Ubud and luxuriate at Bali Botanica Day Spa, our favorite among that town’s renowned spas. During our two days of R&R at Pemuteran on the western coast, you can hike, snorkel or scuba dive, or simply to read and relax at your garden bungalow and get a massage. Each night you will stay in elegant lodging, Balinese style: a small bungalow with private garden shower, beautiful views, and local furnishings.
This journey is for those who view the pilgrimage as an opportunity not just to collect impressions and memories, but also to share your own joy, fascination, and sense of adventure with others. It is an invitation to celebrate your own seeking spirit and discover how your longing for joy and creativity in life meets your desire to make a difference in the world.
Ten percent of the profits of the trip will be donated to Tamblang Sacred Springs Conservation Project in Munduk.
